And the Winner Is...

May has been filled with judging showmanship, grooming and training at some excellent 4-H achievement days across Alberta. I always enjoy judging these types of "skill" competitions because every member has the opportunity to do well regardless of whether their animal is the class winner or not. A lot of hard work and practice at home certainly pays off when it's show time!

I like to give each member some brief feedback before I address the group with comments. Letting each member know what they did well and what they can improve upon is often taken to heart more so when it is personally told to them versus just hearing general comments. Beyond the technical aspects of showmanship, the one thing that I always tell 4-H members to remember is that showmanship is about presenting your animal in it's best light. The goal of everything you do in the ring as a showman should be to make your animal look it's best for the judge.

I thoroughly enjoy seeing members across the province show off their projects that they have worked hard with throughout the year. Getting to judge these members is a priviledge and a wonderful opportunity to give back to a program that has given me so much.
